Chapter 9 summary

”  I’m simply defending a negro.”

Atticus says this towards. I believe by using the word ” simply ” implies that the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man charged with rape, is insignificant over the fact that he is a negro. Additionally, due to Atticus’s kind personality, he is comforting Scout with a lie (it’s almost as when an adult tells a child everything is going to be okay).

This begins with some very clear analysis, zooming in on the word ‘simply’. Your use of the word ‘insignificant’ works well to support this, but then your work stops abruptly.

How might you develop the ending of this paragraph? Two ideas to try:
    1) do the colloquial phrase, try using the word belittles
    2) link this to a theme or another event in the novel
