The Understanding Task

LADY MACBETH

Who was it that thus cried? Why, worthy thane,
You do unbend your noble strength to think
So brainsickly of things. Go get some water,
And wash this filthy witness from your hand.
Why did you bring these daggers from the place?
They must lie there. Go carry them and smear
The sleepy grooms with blood.

LADY MACBETH

Who said that? Why, my worthy lord, you let yourself
become weak when you think about things in this
cowardly way. Go get some water and wash this
bloody evidence from your hands. Why did you carry these
daggers out of the room? They have to stay there. Go
take them back and smear the sleeping guards with the blood.

I think that these lines that Lady Macbeth speaks connotes that she is acting and showing herself to be desperate at this moment – Macbeth has killed the king. Normally after murder the person is a rush and, not the person behind the scenes but, in this case Lady Macbeth is showing that she seems to be worrying more about hiding the evidence then Macbeth’s problems of the fact that the King is murdered. To me that implies that Lady Macbeth is more of a deceptive type of person, furthermore, she instantaneously takes the lead role when needed.

    Hello Moniem,

I am pleased to see you are using analysis style conjunctions in order to show your perceptive inferences of character personalities.

    Targets:
    1) Try to embed quotations within your paragraph to support your point
    2) To begin to analyse the language, you must identify and explore the effects of language devices, grammar devices or dramatic devices.

    Keep it up,

    Mr North

You make very astute points about Lady Macbeth’s character that show a good understanding of their relationship and her role within the action.

What would improve your analysis here would be if you had look at each line you had chosen separately (which task from the homework did you choose – Understanding? This needs to be made clear to understand the aim of your work). Then you would be able to focus more specifically on which words (language, grammar or dramatic devices) show which of Lady Macbeth’s characteristics or feelings. This would demonstrate your analysis much more clearly.

You did a very good job of this in your classwork, check your feedback on this and try to include it in future work as your skills of analysis are developing nicely.
