Chapter 9 summary

”  I’m simply defending a negro.”

Atticus says this towards. I believe by using the word ” simply ” implies that the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man charged with rape, is insignificant over the fact that he is a negro. Additionally, due to Atticus’s kind personality, he is comforting Scout with a lie (it’s almost as when an adult tells a child everything is going to be okay).

Chapter 1 summary

In the beginning of the book we are introduced to the characters of Scout, Jem, Atticus, Calpurnia, Dill and the rest of Maycomb society. The society within Maycomb county are described as traditional, Scout narrates about the Radleys after Jem and her tell Dill about Boo Radley ‘ They did not go to church, Maycomb’s principal recreation… ‘, this represents the traditional state in which Maycomb is in. This contributes towards how Maycomb society does not like change or when social contracts are broken, it says the main principal was to always go to church , in the Radleys not doing so they broke the contract  they had with the people causing them to become social outcasts. Finally, I think that this proves that the residents of Maycomb will not accept change and life has to be the way it is.

Chapter 2 summary

In this chapter we see Scout growing up and her having to adapt in the ‘real’ world. ‘ Jem said, “but you’ll see—school’s different.” ‘.  School life for her is quite different than life at home. It can be shown by Jem say about how school is different, people expect you to act in a certain way, Jem is expecting from Scout not to treat him the way she’d treat him at home. Harper Lee uses the hyphen to imply that there is no legitimate answer but you simply have to do what is needed of you. Additionally, by Jem saying ‘ you’ll see ‘ illustrates that Jem cannot think of answer.

Chapter 8 summary

What do we learn about resilience in To Kill A Mockingbird?

Miss Maudies house ignites in flames because of the flue in her kitchen, which she kept on overnight. I think her resiliance is easier because she shows she has an optimistic personality, she also says that she always wanted a smaller house. ” Always wanted a smaller house, Jem Finch. Gives me more yard… for my azaleas. ”  She shows strength because she is not complaining over the fact that she is homless, like most people would, in addition I think she cares more for her plants then herself.

Chapter 5 summary

” Miss Maudie hated her house: time spent indoors was time. “

It says that Miss Maudie hated her house that is why she spends the majority of her time outside gardening. Additionally, this portrays that she prefers to be active over not active, this could be extended to the fact that her husband is dead.

Chapter 7 summary

Scout narrates that the tree hole, which contained the mysterious gifts, has been barracaded by cement, by Mr Nathan.

Throughout the book, Jen suspected that it was Boo Radley was placing all the items in the knot hole and now it’s been blocked. Mr Nathan Radley told Jem and Scout that the tree was supposedly dying, however, what I think supports Jem’s idea is when Atticus says “ The tree is as healthy as you are, Jem. ” It could illustrate that Mr Nathan Radley is trying to stop Boo from attempting to communicate with everyone else.

Chapter 6 summary

In the chapter Dill, Jem and Scout decide to go on a ‘walk’in the middle of the night and end up in the Radley’s yard attempting to enter the house in order to look at Boo Radley. Resulting in Dill having to lie to the elders of Maycomb society that they were playing ‘strip’ poker at Miss Rachel’s fish pool, instead of telling the truth that it was them who were trespassing in the Radley’s property, also that they were the ones that Mr Radley shot at.

However, Dill had told the lie to cover up the truth for numerous reasons, one could being social contracts and relationships. Jem quotes“Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way.” This illustrates that in order for Jem to keep that maternal relationship with Atticus Jem had to go and grab his pants from the fence, in addition saying that Atticus has never whipped me shows that their relationship has been stable.
